Deep within the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His life was mostly untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was mainly to care for his flock of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind among the single tree on the mountaintop were his constant companions. Day upon day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.
Tales of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One morning he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no wolf.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This trick continued for a few days more. However, one day, a real wolf actually attack the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a website mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
